Activities To Stay Active This Winter

Fireplace Alternatives To Keep Your Warm And Active

The excuses you make to yourself over the next few months may range from, “It’s too cold to work out!” to “I’m too busy to do anything else!”  Yes, it can be tough to get motivated when the wind is howling or the snow is falling like crazy,  but don’t give up all thoughts of staying active – indoors or out. A little planning will help you get through the winter months ahead. Sometimes, all you need may just be one of the best cooling towels to give you that extra boost that you need.

Explore new, fun Activities. As the seasons change, explore new outdoor activities such as cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing. The reason you aren’t motivated to go out might be that you don’t find what you used to do very exciting. A new activity can instill you with a new sense of excitement and passion

Insulate Your Body

The best approach to dressing for outdoor activity is with layers. Layering provides the most effective way to stay warm and dry. Plus you can always remove the top layer if you get too hot. The layer closest to your skin should allow moisture to be wicked away; avoid cotton because once it gets wet, it tends to stay wet. The top layer should be both wind- and water-resistant. Something synthetic is your best bet. Supplementing this with a thick undershirt or some scarves can further protect your body. If you get cold, you’ll get sluggish and find yourself struggling to find the energy to do much else.

Keep Yourself Fully-Clothed

While you may be tempted to immediately remove layers when you go back inside, give your body time to adjust. If you are not wet, wait for 5 to 15 minutes before changing back into other clothes. If you lose heat from your body too quickly, you may experience post-exercise hypothermia, which is a result of the body reducing its production of heat while rapidly losing its existing heat stores. You might not immediately realize this is happening to you but if you repeatedly experience this, it could have some long-term negative effects on your body.

Drink Plenty Of Fluids

It’s just as important to stay hydrated when active in winter as it is in summer, even though you might not feel as thirsty. Drink water before, during and after an outdoor workout. Smart tip: carry a thermos with herbal tea. Your thermos can keep it warm all day and the tea can give you a little kick when you need the energy in between the day.

Use As Many Daylight Hours

If possible, it’s best to be active outdoors while it is still light out. But shorter days may make that difficult. If you choose to work out while it’s dark, try to wear reflective materials on your clothing to stay safe. Use as many of those warm hours as you can. Schedule your workouts to where they’re between 11 am and 3 pm because those are the warmest hours of the day.
